What I Do

Physical therapist educating patient on anatomy

Physical Therapy

Regardless of your injury or condition, physical rehabilitation involves giving your body as many options as possible for moving around safely with control and without symptoms while supporting the areas that need to heal and recover.

Evaluation

We start with an evaluation on the first visit where we will talk about the information you filled out on the intake forms, the specific details of your problem, and your life so I can get to know you better.

After talking, I will then perform a hands-on exam, posture and movement analysis, provide education on what is going on and my recommended treatment plan. Some movement training and/or manual treatment may also be done depending on time and appropriateness of care.

We’ll spend approximately 1 to 1.5 hours together depending on the complexity of your case.

By taking the time to listen to you and listen to your body, we'll figure out the cause and contributors of your symptoms and discover which movement patterns are most limited.

Because every person has a unique situation, the number of treatment sessions required depends on the evaluation and your progress. Based on the agreed upon plan of care, we will schedule the recommended number of sessions at the end of the evaluation.

Treatment

Treatment sessions start the next visit after you’ve had an evaluation. Each session lasts between 45 minutes to 1 hour.

We always start with a chat to discuss how the last visit went, how your home program is going, and what concerns or questions you have.

In these visits, we'll find the appropriate manual therapy techniques and modalities to help you discover new ways in which your body can move symptom-free.

Manual joint mobilization of the lower back

These techniques increase your range of motion, support tissue healing, and help you become more aware of different ways that your body can move.

Some techniques I use:

  • Joint Mobilization
  • Instrument Assisted or Soft Tissue Mobilization
  • Myofascial Decompression (cupping)
  • Myofascial and Trigger Point Release
  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage
  • Craniosacral Therapy
  • Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation

kinesiotape application

These tools manage pain, increase range of motion, increase circulation, increase stability, increase body awareness, and awaken your muscles.

I may use the following modalities to support your healing:

  • Taping including kinesiotape
  • Ultrasound
  • Thermotherapy (ice, moist heat)
  • Electrical Stimulation

You will learn the skills needed to help you manage your symptoms as well as improve your mobility, coordination, and control. These may include self- mobilization techniques, neuromuscular re-education, lifestyle and therapeutic exercises, and pacing strategies.

teaching self mobilization of the knee joint

Self-mobilization techniques are versions of manual therapy techniques that you can do on your own. They maintain or increase improvements in pain, motion, awareness, and coordination.

Practicing neuromuscular re-education involves working with your brain and nervous system to hone body awareness, improve muscle activation, timing, and coordination.

You'll learn how to identify appropriate and inappropriate sensations when moving and what to do when an inappropriate sensation occurs.

Lifestyle exercises use your everyday movements to embed new movement patterns into your daily life. For example, you may practice how to intentionally activate specific muscles every time you sit down in a chair or climb stairs.

Therapeutic exercises are exercises selected specifically to target muscles needed to address your injury or area of concern. They require you to schedule time to perform them in your day.

If you are suffering from post-exertional malaise or fatigue, pacing is a lifestyle strategy used to prevent symptom exacerbation/ "crashes". It involves careful planning of where and when to spend available physical, cognitive, and emotional energy while staying within a person's specific limited capacity.

We'll collaborate on how to appropriately and safely incorporate exercise into your daily life and consider quality of life factors like sleep, nutrition, and stress management, to help improve your health.

After your visits, I provide a tailored summary that includes any new or key concepts we worked on, helpful tips and reminders, as well as your home exercise program or updates to your program.

As your body changes or adapts, your program and plan of care will adjust accordingly to ensure you are still making progress towards your goals and feel confident that you can manage your issues on your own with minimal support from me.

Your transition to self-care may require tune up sessions instead of treatment to help you stay healthy over the long term.

Wellness Sessions

Tune Ups

These sessions are available to help support the self-care routine of your orthopedic, postural, or chronic medical conditions by providing accountability and some hands-on assistance.

Each session lasts between 45 minutes to 1hour.

The beginning of each visit starts with a debrief. We will discuss how things have been going for you. I will provide hands-on treatment and make any adjustments needed to your program to ensure you are maintaining your progress.

Depending on how much support you need and what your goals are, we schedule these sessions for every month, every 3 months, or every 6 months to keep you healthy over the long term.

Neurolymphatic Body Work

These sessions are available for anyone who is interested in getting craniosacral therapy and/or manual lymphatic drainage. Both of these manual therapy modalities are beneficial for calming the nervous system and supporting the immune system.

You can choose from 60 and 90 minute sessions.

Pilates

Pilates is a method of exercising using various equipment to strengthen the mind-body connection and hone your body awareness. It is a great way to improve your coordination, posture, strength, and flexibility in a way that maintains balance within the body.

If you are interested in doing Pilates, I offer private one on one sessions. You may choose from reformer, mat, tower or combined work.

Sessions last 50 minutes.
